A Rest From Looking at the Moon

2019 – Ongoing

A horrifying report by UNICEF in 2017 placed New Zealand on top of the list for highest youth suicide rates among teenagers in the developed world. Sadly, the number of suicides is still increasing with the highest-ever level in 2019.

This photo essay is the story of some of those Kiwi youths and their battle with issues regarding mental health. The images will be accompanied with writings from the young participants.

The title of the series is borrowed from a haiku poem by Japanese Zen poet Matsuo Basho (1644-94):

Clouds come from time to time -

and bring to men a chance to rest

from looking at the moon.
